Why Value a Registered BAS agent
/Why choosing a registered BAS agent protects your business — and how to find one you can trust.
The Tax Practitioners Board has launched a campaign throughout 2026 to help businesses identify registered BAS agents and avoid the serious risks of using unregistered BAS preparers.
Accurate financial reporting is the backbone of any healthy business. Yet many business owners unknowingly hand their BAS obligations to unregistered preparers — people who lack the qualifications to advise on tax obligations and who, if they lodge statements to the ATO on your behalf, are doing so at risk to you.
Incorrect or incomplete submissions can result in penalties and legal consequences — for you, the business owner, not the preparer. That's why the Tax Practitioners Board's 'Find a BAS agent you can trust' campaign matters and why knowing how to verify your agent is essential.
Is your BAS agent registered?
Verifying your agent takes minutes and could save your business from serious financial and legal trouble. Here's how to confirm registration:
Search the TPB Register — the register lists all registered tax practitioners and includes details of any deregistered practitioners along with the reasons for termination.
Look for the registered tax practitioner symbol — a registered agent will display the official TPB symbol on their website, email signature, stationery, brochures, and business cards.
How to choose a BAS agent you can trust
Use these 6 steps to confidently select a registered BAS agent for your business:
Verify TPB registration
Search the TPB Register at tpb.gov.au before engaging anyone. Confirm their name appears and their registration is current and active.
Look for the symbol
Check their website, emails, and business materials for the registered tax practitioner symbol. If it's not there, ask why.
Check qualifications
Registered BAS agents must hold relevant bookkeeping qualifications and meet ongoing CPD requirements. Don't be afraid to ask.
Understand your lodgement cycle
BAS can be submitted monthly, quarterly, or annually. Confirm your agent understands your obligations and lodgement frequency.
Ask about their process
A trusted agent will have clear processes for reviewing, reconciling, and lodging your BAS accurately and on time.
Choose experience & fit
Look for an agent who understands your industry and communicates clearly. A good relationship means fewer surprises come lodgement time.
