Automation can save time. But can you trust the financials?
/Why human oversight still matters in an automated world.
Automation has changed the way bookkeeping is done.
Bank feeds, suggested matches, automated rules and AI-assisted tools can remove a lot of repetitive work from the finance function. Used well, that is a positive thing.
But a recent conversation with an accountant raised an important point: automation does not remove the need to understand what is happening behind the numbers.
A transaction being automatically matched does not necessarily mean it has been treated correctly. A process running efficiently does not necessarily mean the information coming out the other side is accurate.
And as a business grows, that distinction becomes increasingly important.
At QiBalance Bookkeeping, we are interested in technology because it can create better processes and give people more time to focus on work that requires judgement. But efficiency is not the end goal.
Reliable financial information is.
That is why human review still matters.
Someone needs to recognise when something does not look right, understand the context of a transaction, ask the right question and know when an issue needs to be raised with the accountant.
It also highlights why the relationship between bookkeeper and accountant is so valuable.
When the bookkeeping is current and reliable, the accountant has a much stronger foundation for tax planning, compliance and advice. Instead of spending valuable time trying to establish what happened in the accounts, the conversation can move towards what the numbers actually mean for the business.
Technology will keep changing how finance teams work. We welcome that.
What does your business still rely on a person to review, even when the process has been automated?
